Devi Mahatmya 5.45

Meaning · English

Then Chanda and Munda, the two servants of Shumbha and Nishumbha, saw Ambika. She wore a supreme form, utterly captivating to the mind. They described her to Shumbha: an exceedingly lovely woman, great king, is staying there, making the Himalaya shine with her light.

Two words carry the scene. Bhritya means servant, one who is kept and fed by a master and speaks for him. Sumanohara means mind-stealing: su is good, manas is mind, hara is the one who carries off. The text uses it twice, once for how Ambika looks and once for how the servants report her. Chanda and Munda are the two servants of the brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha. They come upon Ambika and see a form so beautiful that attention cannot rest anywhere else. They carry the sight back to Shumbha, and their report has three parts. She is a woman. She is extremely lovely. She is staying there, and her light makes the Himalaya shine, as if the mountain borrowed its brightness from her. The Devi Mahatmya is telling the beginning of a fatal mistake. The servants see only a beautiful woman, and that is how they pass her on to their master. The sage Medhas tells this to the king who lost his kingdom and the merchant cast out by his family. Through the servants' eyes it shows how the great Maya, which binds, first appears to those who want things: as something to look at, something to own. Nothing in the report names her as Mother or as Goddess.

A lamp is carried into a dark hall, and every head turns toward it. The ones who see only the glow ask who owns it and how to take it. Chanda and Munda are those watchers, and Ambika is the lamp on the mountain.
