Meaning · English
Nowhere has anyone seen a form so excellent. Let it be learned who this goddess is, and let her be seized, lord of the asuras. She is a woman-jewel, most lovely in every limb, lighting all the directions with her radiance. She stands there, chief of the daityas. You ought to see her.
Three words carry the verse. Stri-ratna is woman-jewel: stri, woman; ratna, jewel. A ratna is a treasure a king collects, so the word shows how the speakers think. They measure her as an object of the highest rank. Asureshvara and daityendra are titles, lord of the asuras and chief of the daityas. They flatter Shumbha as master. Tvisha is radiance, and she fills every direction with it. Now the clauses. Nobody anywhere has seen a form like hers. So find out who this goddess is, and have her seized. She is a jewel of a woman, lovely in every limb, her light spreading to all quarters. She stands there, and Shumbha ought to look. Why say all this to him? Chanda and Munda are reporting what they saw on the mountain. Their reason is that he gathers the finest things in the three worlds, and the verses after this one list the treasures already in his house. She would be one more. They call her a goddess and advise seizing her in the same breath. The Devi Mahatmya, as Medhas tells it, lets the two attitudes sit side by side without comment. Seeing a beauty and wanting to own it are different acts, and these two servants run them together.
A dealer at an auction notices a painting that seems to light the whole wall. He does not stand in front of it. He whispers to his client that it must be bought. He saw the light and heard only a price. The servants speak of her the same way: radiance reported as an item for the house.
