Meaning · English

Whatever jewels and gems there are, my lord, elephants, horses and the rest, all that the three worlds hold now shines in your house. Airavata, the elephant-jewel, has been brought from Indra, the city-breaker. Here is the Parijata tree, and Uchchaihshravas the horse as well. This wondrous flying palace yoked to swans stands in your courtyard, the one that once belonged to the Creator. It was carried here as a jewel.

Chanda and Munda are Shumbha's servants, and they are making a case to him. Three words carry it. Ratna means jewel, but also the finest of any kind, so an elephant can be a jewel of elephants. Vimana is a celestial vehicle, a palace that flies. Parijata is the heavenly tree, one of the treasures of the gods. The verse is a list, read as a tour of Shumbha's house. First comes a sweeping claim: every gem and every prize animal in the three worlds now shines in his home. Then the proof, item by item. Airavata, the great elephant, was brought from Indra. The Parijata tree stands there. So does Uchchaihshravas, the horse. In the courtyard rests the swan-drawn flying palace that once belonged to the Creator, Brahma. The word brought, repeated, tells the reader these were not made or earned. They were carried off from the gods. Medhas retells this to Suratha and Samadhi, two men who have lost what was theirs. Why do the servants recite the list? Because they want Shumbha to take one more thing. In their reasoning, a man who holds the best of everything should not lack the most beautiful woman they have just described. The text shows how flattery works: it counts what a ruler owns until the next grab seems natural. It also lets the reader see what the servants leave out. Every item on the list has an owner who was robbed.

A man's living room is crowded with furniture, lamps and rugs, each piece taken from a different neighbour's house. A visitor who admires the room praises the taking without knowing it. The list of treasures is that room, and Chanda and Munda are the admiring visitor.
