Boar and Man-Lion
Devi Mahatmya 11.16
Meaning · English
You who hold the fearsome great discus, who in the form of the Boar lifted the earth on your tusk, auspicious one, Narayani, homage to you. You who took the dreadful form of the Man-Lion, rising to strike down the demons, who bring protection to the three worlds, Narayani, homage to you.
Two words carry the verse. Narayani means the power of Narayana, the Goddess named through the god Vishnu whose forms She takes. Shiva, here, means auspicious, kindly. Trailokya means the three worlds, all that lives, and trana means protection, a shelter from danger. The gods now praise Her in two of Vishnu's famous forms. First She is the Boar. Earth had sunk, and the Boar raised it up on his tusk. She holds the great discus, a weapon of fierce reach, and is still called auspicious, kind. Second She is the Man-Lion, terrible in form, who rose up to destroy demons. The verse ends on the purpose of that terror: it brings protection to all three worlds. Why is this taught here? The gods have just been saved, and they ask a plain question: who is this who fights for us? Their answer is that She is the same power behind every rescue they already know. The hymn does not call Her fearful for its own sake. Each form is fearsome toward the danger and kind toward the endangered. What the verse asks of a listener is to see that fierceness and mercy, in this telling, come from one Mother.
A mother dog stands over her pups on a flooded road, teeth bared at the approaching stray. The growl is frightening, yet every part of it is care. In the same way, the Boar's lifting and the Man-Lion's roar are the Goddess's protection wearing a fierce face.
