Fangs, Skulls, Munda's End

Devi Mahatmya 11.20

Meaning · English

O Chamunda, with a face terrible in its fangs, adorned with a garland of skulls, crusher of Munda, Narayani, salutation to you.

Three words carry this praise. Damshtra means fang, the tooth that tears. Karala means dreadful, gaping. Chamunda is the name the Goddess took after she killed the demons Chanda and Munda, and muṇḍamathane, crusher of Munda, recalls that victory. Narayani is the name the gods repeat at the end of every praise in this hymn. Read clause by clause, the gods name a face, an ornament, a deed and a title. The face is fanged and fearsome. The ornament is a garland of skulls. The deed is the crushing of Munda, an enemy of the world. The title, Narayani, ends the verse as it ends each one before it. So the gods bow to a terrible form and call it by a gentle, familiar name in the same breath. The hymn answers a plain question: how can the Mother who frees also look so frightening? The gods give their reason by the order of the praise. Her fierce form is the one that struck down the enemy, and they name it in thanks, not in fear. The text does not ask the listener to admire the skulls. The reader is shown that the gods bow to the same Goddess in every shape, even this one. Bhaskararaya and Nagoji Bhatta are not cited here, because the commentators' reading of this line adds nothing the words do not already say.

A mother bear stands over her cubs with bared teeth when a threat comes near. To a stranger the face is frightening. To the cubs it is the face that keeps them safe. The gods see the Goddess's fangs in the same way.
