Present on Every Side

Devi Mahatmya 11.23

Meaning · English

On every side Your hands and feet, on every side Your eyes, heads and faces, on every side Your ears and Your sense of smell. Narayani, salutation to You.

The gods put one word in front of every part of the Goddess they name: sarvataḥ, 'on every side', from all directions. Then they list: pani, hands; pada, feet; akshi, eyes; shiras, heads; mukha, faces; shravana, hearing; ghrana, smell. No limb is placed in one spot. Each is said to be everywhere. Hands and feet speak of her doing and going, so her help needs no journey. Eyes and faces speak of her looking and answering. Ears speak of hearing every call. Smell is the quiet sense that notices what is near and unseen, so nothing slips past her. The hymn does not describe a strange body. It tells how far her attention and her reach go. The gods have just called her by many names and fierce forms, and here they say she is not far off. Whoever calls is already within her sight and hearing. The line ends, as the other praises do, with a bow to her as Narayani. The text asks nothing of the reader beyond hearing how the gods address her: as a Mother who is already there.

A mother at home hears a child's whisper from the next room, smells the milk about to boil over, and knows where everyone is without turning her head. Her care reaches through the whole house. The verse says the Goddess's hands, eyes and ears reach like that, on every side.
