A Plea for Rescue

Devi Mahatmya 11.24

Meaning · English

O Devi, you who have every form, who are Mistress of all, who are endowed with all power: save us from our fears, O Goddess Durga. Homage to you.

Three titles open the verse, and the plea follows. Sarvasvarupa means 'having every form': svarupa is one's own shape or nature, so the gods call her the one whose shape is all things. Sarvesha, 'mistress of all', comes from ish, to rule; nothing falls outside her command. Shakti is power, and samanvita means 'joined with' or 'endowed with', so she is never short of strength. Durga is the name of the one who is hard to reach, and so the one who carries others across hard places. Then comes the request itself: save us from fears. The word is plural, bhaya, fear in many kinds, and the gods ask her to ferry them out of all of them. The closing line is a bow. The gods speak after the battles, when their own danger has passed. Even so, they do not praise and leave. They ask for protection from what could come again. Why this belongs in the hymn: the earlier verses name her many names and her presence on every side. This one gathers that into a petition. Because she is all forms, the gods say, no fear lies outside her reach. Because she rules all and holds all power, she is able to save. Bhaskararaya's Guptavati is among the commentaries that read the Devi Mahatmya's praises as deeper than a plain list of titles. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to hear how the gods ask.

A child lost in a crowded market clings to the hem of one grown person's coat, certain that this person knows every lane and can open every gate. The child's grip is the gods' plea, and the person who knows every lane is the Goddess, trusted because her knowledge and her strength cover the whole market.
