Meaning · English
He saw there the hermitage of Medhas, best among the twice-born. Wild beasts that had grown peaceful roamed about it, and it was made beautiful by the sage's pupils. The sage received him with honour, and the king stayed there for some time, wandering here and there in that hermitage of the great sage.
The verse is a plain turn in the story. The king, who has lost his kingdom and ridden alone into the forest, comes upon a hermitage. Three words carry it. Ashrama is a hermitage, a place of effort and rest, from a root meaning to strive. Dvijavara means best of the twice-born, a title of respect for a learned brahmin. Satkrta means treated well, made welcome, honoured as a guest. The text says Medhas lives among beasts that have grown calm, and that his pupils make the place beautiful. It is describing a place where fear has settled. The king is received with honour, which he has just lost in his own palace. He stays for a while and walks about the grounds without purpose. The commentators do not make much of this verse; it is a bridge. It is taught here because the Goddess's teaching needs a listener and a teacher in one place. The king needs somewhere quiet enough to ask why his mind still clings to a kingdom that betrayed him. Medhas will answer that question later. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to notice that the answer begins with a place of safety, a welcome, and time.
A traveller caught in a storm steps into a farmhouse kitchen. The stove is warm, the dogs are asleep, and nobody asks him anything yet. Only after he has dried out can he think about where he was going. The hermitage is that kitchen for the king.
