Meaning · English
Then, sitting there, his mind dragged along by the sense of "mine," the king began to think. The city my forefathers guarded, and I now gone from it: are my wicked servants ruling it by right, or not? I cannot tell. My chief elephant, brave and always in rut, has fallen into my enemy's power. What comforts will he get? Those who always followed me and lived on my favour, my wealth and my food now surely wait on other kings. Spendthrifts who spend without pause will drain the treasury I built with such hardship, and it will come to ruin.
Markandeya tells what the exiled king was thinking at the hermitage. The first clause names the cause. His mind was "mamatva-akrishta," pulled along by mamatva. That word comes from mama, "my": the grip of calling something mine. He is not in the kingdom, but his mind is. Three worries follow. First, the city. His forebears guarded it, and he fears his old servants are no longer ruling it by dharma, meaning rightful, fair conduct. Second, his war elephant, strong and proud, now in enemy hands. He wonders what comforts it will get, as though it were still his to look after. Third, his followers. They lived on his favour, wealth and food, so he assumes they now give anuvritti, the following-after of loyal service, to other kings. Last, he pictures the treasury he gathered with great effort being drained by careless spenders. Every thought is a guess. He says he cannot know. Yet each one hurts as if it were fact. The story gives this moment so the question can be asked: why does a mind keep clinging to what has already been taken, and to people who turned on it? The king does not choose this worry. It pulls him, as the text says. Medhas will later call that pull the work of Mahamaya, the Goddess as great Maya, who binds the mind. The verse asks nothing of the reader. It only shows how mamatva keeps working after the thing is gone.
A man sells his house, then drives past it each evening. He looks for lit windows and wonders whether the new owners water the plants or let the gate rust. He no longer owns anything there, yet his mind still lives inside. That is the king's mamatva, a hold that stays after the ownership has gone.
