The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 7 · Those Who Turn to Him

Wants That Steal Judgment

Bhagavad Gita 7.20

Meaning · English

Those whose knowledge has been carried off by one desire or another surrender to other gods. Following one rule or another, each is held fast by his own nature.

Three words carry the verse. Kama is desire, a pull toward some particular thing. Hrita-jnana means knowledge that has been carried away, the way a thief carries off a purse. Prakriti is nature, the settled makeup a person brings from past habit, and niyata means bound or steered by it. Krishna tells Arjuna that people turn to other gods because wants of every kind have taken their clear sight. They are not choosing from a calm place. Each then adopts a set of rules and observances, and each is steered by his own nature in doing so. The reason Krishna gives is the problem of the preceding verses: few arrive at the knowledge that Vasudeva is all, so most worship for what they lack. The verse asks the listener to see what is driving the turning, whether sight or want. It does not insult the worship itself. Shankara reads the carried-away knowledge as lost discrimination, so these people never see the one Self behind the gods. Ramanuja reads the other gods as real but lesser, and holds that they are limited powers who depend on the Lord. Madhva stresses that the rules and the nature that binds each person differ from one person to the next.

A man walks through a market with a fixed craving for something sweet. His feet carry him past a dozen stalls to the first sugar smell, and he never looks at the others. The craving picks the stall; his eyes do not. Desire plays that role in the verse, steering a person to whichever god seems likely to supply the want.

1. Today, when you catch yourself wanting something badly, a purchase, a reply, a bit of praise, stop for one minute before acting. 2. Ask in plain words: what is this want doing to my judgment right now? 3. Notice whether the choices ahead of you look narrower than they did an hour ago. 4. Note one habit or rule you follow out of old temperament rather than clear thought, and simply name it in your head or on paper.

A mother sits at midnight beside her feverish child, scrolling through remedies, promises and hopeful strangers online. She is frightened, and she is ready to try anything that sounds sure. The verse would change little in what she feels but something in how she chooses. First she can see that fear has narrowed her choices, as the verse says desire carries off knowledge. Second, she can ask which of these she is reaching for from need and which from clear sight. Third, she can see that her own temperament, whether anxious or trusting, is steering the reaching. Then she can act: call the doctor, give what the doctor advises, and let the rest wait for morning. The verse does not promise the fever will break, nor does it remove her fear, and it is no replacement for medical care. Ordinary experience does confirm one thing: a person in the grip of a strong want or fear chooses worse than the same person at rest.
