Faith Made Steady

Bhagavad Gita 7.21

Meaning · English

Whoever, as a devotee, desires to worship with faith whatever form, in each such person I make that very faith steady and unshaken.

Three words carry this. Bhakta is a devotee, one who gives himself to what he worships. Shraddha is faith, a trust that leans toward something before it has proof. Achala means unmoving, from a, not, and chala, to shake. Krishna tells Arjuna that whoever sincerely wants to worship through some chosen form, a tanu, which means body or shape, receives from him a faith that stops wavering. The faith is aimed at that same form the person picked. Krishna does not argue the person out of it or hand him another one. The reason sits in the verses before: people turn to many gods because desires pull them, and they might doubt whether such devotion can hold. Krishna answers that the steadiness itself is his gift. The listener is asked to see that a sincere wish to worship is already met by support, and that firm faith is not earned by willpower alone. Shankara reads the form as the deities, with Krishna as the inner ruler who grants their faith. Ramanuja holds that the forms are all his own body, so the support goes to him. Madhva stresses that the Lord alone steadies every devotee, whatever form is chosen.

A child learning to ride a bicycle wobbles until a parent runs behind, one hand on the seat. The child picks the direction and does the pedaling. The steady hand is felt only as the wobble fades. Faith is the pedaling, and the quiet hand behind it is what Krishna says he provides.

1. Choose one form of worship, prayer or remembrance you already feel drawn to, however small. 2. Give it ten minutes at the same time each day this week, such as before breakfast. 3. Afterward, note in a line whether your trust felt shakier or steadier than the day before. 4. When doubt comes, do not argue with it. Simply return the next day at the same hour.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at night while her father is in surgery. She has prayed to the same image since childhood, and now her mind keeps racing with doubts about whether it matters. The verse, as Krishna gives it, changes the moment in steps. First, her wish to turn toward that form is itself taken seriously, not corrected. Second, the steadiness she wants is described as something given to her, so she need not force certainty. Third, she can simply keep doing the small act, saying the name or folding her hands, and let the steadiness come. Ordinary experience agrees that a familiar practice calms a restless mind better than a new argument does. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise that her father will recover, that the surgery will succeed, or that her fear will vanish. It speaks of faith becoming firm, not of outcomes, and it does not replace the surgeon or the care around her.
