Meaning · English

Endowed with that faith, he sets himself to worship that form, and from it he obtains his desires. Those desires, certainly, are granted by me alone.

Krishna takes three words apart here. Shraddha is faith, a trust given before proof arrives. Aradhana is worship, the steady act of attending to something. Kama is desire, a wish that pulls toward an object. Krishna tells Arjuna the plain sequence: a person has faith in some form, tries to worship it, and receives what he wanted. Then comes the turn. Those wishes were granted by Krishna alone. The god being worshipped was the visible door, but the giving came from him. The reason follows from the verse before, where Krishna says he himself makes each person's faith steady in whatever form they choose. If he gives the faith, the fruit of that faith also passes through his hands. The problem it answers is a quiet one: people credit the wrong source and conclude that the thing they bowed to was the whole of it. It asks Arjuna to see where results truly come from. Shankara reads the granting as Ishvara dispensing fruit through the gods, so the gods are only channels. Ramanuja reads every deity as having Krishna as its inner self, so the gift is his in any case. Madhva stresses that the giver is the Supreme alone and that all other beings depend on him.

A tap in a kitchen gives you water, and you thank the tap. Behind the wall a pipe runs to a tank, and behind that a river you have never seen. The tap, the form you worship, is only where the water arrives. The source is the one Krishna names.

1. Tonight, write down one thing you received this week that you had hoped for: a job reply, a kind word, a good meal, a recovered friendship. 2. Beside it, name the person or object you would normally thank for it. 3. Then spend two quiet minutes asking where that thing began, and thank that source too, silently or aloud. 4. Notice whether the thanks feels wider than usual.

A man stands outside the operating theatre while his wife is in surgery, bargaining with everything he can think of: a vow to the temple, a promise to the surgeon, a prayer to a god he rarely addresses. Each bargain feels like a lever he can pull. The verse changes the moment in steps. First it lets his faith stand without being embarrassed, since the text says such faith is real and bears fruit. Second, it loosens his grip on the lever, because Krishna says the granting is his and not the property of any object or ritual. So the man can pray without treating the prayer as a purchase. Third, if the outcome comes, he knows where to place his gratitude, and if it does not, he has not staked everything on one bargain failing. Ordinary experience confirms that people who bargain hard with fate tend to feel more cheated when it goes wrong. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the surgery will succeed, that every wish is granted, or that faith replaces the surgeon's skill. It says only where Krishna places the giving.
