Meaning · English
The power called Utkrantida, the giver of death's departure, has been taken by you, lord. Varuna's noose is held by your brother. All the jewels born of the ocean belong to Nishumbha. Fire itself gave you two garments, cleansed by fire. So, lord of the daityas, every jewel has been brought to you. This auspicious woman is a jewel too. Why is she not taken by you?
Chanda and Munda are still speaking to Shumbha, in Medhas's retelling. They finish the list of what he owns and then ask one question. Three words carry it. Shakti is power, here a weapon with a name, Utkrantida, which the text gives as death's own. Ratna is jewel, the finest of its kind, whether a stone, an elephant or a person. Kalyani means auspicious, one who brings good. Now the clauses. Death's weapon is already Shumbha's. The noose of Varuna, lord of waters, sits with his brother Nishumbha. Every jewel that came out of the ocean is Nishumbha's. Fire gave Shumbha two cloths that fire purifies. From this the two counsellors conclude that every jewel has been gathered in. Then comes the turn: this auspicious woman is also a jewel, so why is she not taken? The text sets this out so the reader can hear how greed argues. The speakers have only one measure, ownership. A long list of possessions becomes the reason for one more. They call the Goddess a stri-ratna, a woman-jewel, and that is their word for her. It shows what they are able to see. They do not see a person or a power greater than their lord. They see an item missing from a shelf. This is why Medhas's story gives the speech in full. It shows the mind that Maya binds, where having much only sharpens the sense of what is not yet had. The listener is shown that reasoning, and the text does not endorse it.
A man with a wall of trophies in glass cases walks past, sees a gap on the last shelf, and grows restless over that one empty space. He no longer looks at the full cases. Shumbha's mind works the same way: the list of what he holds turns into hunger for what he does not.
