The Messenger Sent Ahead

Devi Mahatmya 5.57

Meaning · English

Hearing these words of Chanda and Munda, the great asura Shumbha sent Sugriva as his messenger to the Goddess. He said: "Go to her, and speak to her in this way and that, in my name. See to it quickly that she comes to me gladly, with a willing heart."

Three Sanskrit words open this verse. Duta means messenger, one who is sent, and here it is Sugriva. Vacana means word or message: Shumbha tells Sugriva to carry his words, not his army. SamprityA, from priti, means with joy or willing affection. Shumbha wants her to come gladly, not dragged. The plain sense, clause by clause: Shumbha has just heard Chanda and Munda describe a woman who is the one jewel missing from his hoard. He answers by sending Sugriva. The instruction is to speak to her in this manner and that, adapting the argument as needed, and to make sure she arrives in good will, and soon. The word for quickly shows his impatience. Why it is taught here: the story is showing how craving behaves. Shumbha has taken the treasures of the gods and now treats a living Goddess as one more item to collect, to be won with persuasion first. The text presents him as sure that everything can be fetched. Nothing in his order allows that she might refuse. What it asks of the listener is only to notice this: the ruler who owns everything sends a message as if sending for goods.

A man who has bought every house on a street sends an agent to the last owner, with a polite letter and a firm deadline. The letter is kind in tone, but it assumes the answer. Shumbha's gentle message works the same way: courtesy wrapped around a claim.
