The Messenger's Sweet Words
Devi Mahatmya 5.59
Meaning · English
Sugriva went to the lovely place on the mountain where the Goddess sat, and spoke to her in a smooth, honeyed voice. He said: "Goddess, Shumbha, lord of the daityas, is the supreme lord in the three worlds. I am his messenger. He has sent me, and I have come here to you."
Three words carry the verse. Daityeshvara is "lord of the daityas", the sons of Diti, the rivals of the gods; ishvara is lord, one who rules. Trailokya is the three worlds, heaven, earth and the space between. Duta is a messenger, one who carries another's word and has none of his own. Now the clauses. Sugriva reaches the mountain place where the Goddess is sitting. Medhas says the place is very beautiful, and that the messenger speaks in a soft, sweet voice. Then he says three things. Shumbha is lord of the daityas. Shumbha is the highest lord in the three worlds. And Sugriva is only his envoy, sent here for her. The story gives the reason. Chanda and Munda have just praised the Goddess to Shumbha as the one jewel missing from his collection. Shumbha does not go himself. He sends a man with a gentle manner and a long title. As Medhas tells it, power opens with courtesy and with a claim: the name comes first, the demand after. The sweetness is the messenger's. The claim is Shumbha's. Medhas tells this to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant cast out by his family. Both know how great claims sound. The text asks its listener to notice that the claim is still only a claim.
A man in a neat coat knocks at a door, smiling, and says he comes from the landlord who owns the whole street. He never mentions what the landlord wants. The pleasant voice and the long title are all there is until the request comes, and the request is what counts.
