Shumbha's Claim of Command

Devi Mahatmya 5.61

Meaning · English

Listen to what he says, the one whose orders are never turned back among all the races of the gods, and who has conquered every enemy of the daityas. He says: the three worlds are wholly mine. The gods follow where I lead. I alone take each share of the sacrifice, every one, separately.

Three words carry the verse. Avyahata-jna means one whose command is never struck down, never blocked. Yajna-bhaga is the share of a sacrifice: in the old rites, each god receives his own portion of the offering. Prthak prthak means one by one, each apart. The messenger is quoting Shumbha, and Shumbha lists what he holds. His orders are obeyed by every class of gods. He has defeated all the daityas' enemies. The three worlds are his. The gods are his followers. And the offerings once divided among the gods now all come to him, portion by portion. The messenger says this to show the Goddess how large the man is who is asking for her. The Devi Mahatmya places the boast in the mouth of an asura on purpose. He mistakes taking for owning, and he takes what was given to others as worship. The text does not say yet how this ends. It asks the listener only to notice how complete the claim sounds, and how a ruler who has lost every opponent hears no one who can refuse him. Neither Bhaskararaya nor Nagoji Bhatta is needed to read it. The commentators treat such speeches as the asura's own view of himself.

A man walks through a village market where every stall owner has been made to hand him the best of the day. He collects each basket separately, and he believes the market is his. The sacrifice-shares are those baskets, and Shumbha is the collector who has forgotten they were gifts.
