All the finest jewels in the three worlds are under my sway, without exception. The elephant-jewel too, the mount of the king of the gods, I have taken from him. The horse-jewel, born when the milk ocean was churned, was offered to me by the immortals, who bowed before me. It is the one called Uchchaihshravas. And whatever other things among the gods, the gandharvas and the serpents are counted as jewels, all of them are with me alone. Lovely lady, they are in my keeping.
Here the messenger goes on reading out Shumbha's message, and Shumbha's voice becomes a list of what he owns. The text has him say that every finest thing in the three worlds is under his control. Three words carry the passage. Ratna means jewel, but it stands for the best of any kind, so there are elephant-jewels and horse-jewels as well as stones. Vashya means under one's sway, from the root vash, to will: a thing that must do as another wills. Hritva means having seized, from hri, to carry off. The clauses run in order. First, all the best in the three worlds is his. Second, he took the great elephant that carried Indra, king of the gods. Third, the horse Uchchaihshravas, which rose when the gods and demons churned the milk ocean, was handed to him by the immortals, who bowed. Fourth, anything prized among gods, gandharvas and serpents is his too. The messenger ends by turning to the Goddess, whom he addresses as lovely. Why does the text put this here? Shumbha is answering a question he assumes she is asking: why should she come to him. His answer is that he has everything, so she would be one more jewel in a full treasury. The teaching sits in what he leaves out. He counts things he took or was given by fear, and calls this ownership. The Goddess's reply in 5.69 will deal with his claim. A listener is asked to notice how a boast sounds when it is only an inventory.
A man walks a visitor through his warehouse, pointing at shelf after shelf of goods taken from his neighbours, and then offers the visitor a place on the shelf. The treasures are Shumbha's collected spoils. The offer is his belief that she, too, is something to be possessed.
