Meaning · English
We count you, Goddess, a jewel among women. So come to us, for we are the enjoyers of jewels. Take me, or my younger brother Nishumbha of great valour. Take either of us, you of the restless glance, for you are a jewel indeed. By accepting me you will gain supreme and matchless lordship. Weigh this in your mind, and come into my keeping.
Three Sanskrit words carry the verse. Stri-ratna means a jewel among women. The messenger uses the same word, ratna, that the earlier verses used for the stolen elephant and horse. Ratna-bhuj means an enjoyer of jewels, one who consumes what is precious. Parigraha means taking hold of something as one's own; here it is the word for taking a wife, but it is also the word for a possession. Now the clauses. The messenger, voicing Shumbha, says the Goddess is a jewel, and since Shumbha collects jewels, she belongs with him. He offers a choice: Shumbha himself, or his brother Nishumbha, called mighty. He calls her restless-eyed, a flattering touch. Then comes the bait: supreme, unequalled lordship if she accepts Shumbha. He closes by asking her to think it over and come. Why is this taught here? The tale has Shumbha treat everything as something to hold, gods' shares, elephant, horse, and now a woman. The Goddess is placed on the same shelf. The text lets his own words show what drives him: he can see worth only as goods. The sage Medhas tells this to a king and a merchant who lost what they held, so the picture of a ruler who is nothing but holding is set before them. It asks the listener to notice the grammar of the offer. Praise is given, but she is still being listed as property.
A shopkeeper holds a rare vase up to the light, admires it aloud, and says he will give it a fine place on his shelf. The praise is real, yet the vase is still stock. Shumbha's compliment works the same way: the Goddess is called a jewel and meant as an acquisition.
