The Goddess Smiles, Grants

Devi Mahatmya 5.69

Meaning · English

Spoken to in this way, the Goddess smiled, deep within herself, and answered. She is Durga, the blessed Bhagavati, the gracious one, by whom this world is held up. She said: 'You have spoken truly. Nothing you have said here is false. Shumbha is lord of the three worlds, and Nishumbha is just as mighty.'

Three names open the verse, and each says something. Durga comes from the sense of hard to reach, hard to get past. Bhagavati means the one who holds fortune and majesty. Bhadra means auspicious, kindly. Then comes a clause the text states plainly: she is the one by whom this world is held up. Medhas tells the listener who is about to speak before she says a word. The smile is described as gambhira, deep. It comes from far inside her and is not a smirk. She does not argue with the messenger. In the passages before this he has listed what Shumbha owns and has called her a jewel that belongs in his collection. She agrees that he has told the truth. Shumbha rules the three worlds, and Nishumbha is his equal. The text teaches something by this. Medhas shows the Goddess granting every fact the messenger offers, because for her the facts change nothing. Her calm is not ignorance of his power. She knows it fully and is not shaken. The question behind the scene is what a world-holder says to a world-ruler's boast. In Medhas's telling, she says yes, that is true, and the reply to his demand is still to come. The reader sees that being honest about someone's strength and being unmoved by it can sit together.

A grandmother listens to a small boy describe, at great length, how huge and fierce the neighbour's dog is. She nods and says yes, it is a big dog. She does not dispute a word, and she is not afraid. The Goddess grants Shumbha his power in the same way, easily, because the claim does not touch her.
