Meaning · English
Why should what I once promised be made false? Hear the vow I made long ago, in my small understanding. Whoever defeats me in battle, whoever strips away my pride, whoever in this world is my equal in strength, he will be my husband. So let Shumbha come here, or the great Asura Nishumbha. Let him conquer me, and why wait? Let him take my hand at once.
The messenger has just told the Goddess to marry his master, so she answers by naming a condition she set long before. Three words carry it. Pratijna is a vow, a promise spoken aloud and bound to oneself. Darpa is pride, the swelling of self-regard that comes with strength. Pratibala means a rival in strength, one who stands against you with equal force. Bhartr, husband, literally means the one who bears or supports. Now the clauses. She first asks why a promise should be turned into a lie, so she will not drop it because a powerful king asks. She says she made it in alpa-buddhi, small understanding, a modest phrase that sounds like gentle mockery. Then she states it in three ways: he who defeats me in battle, he who removes my pride, he who is my match in strength. Only such a one becomes her husband. She then invites Shumbha or Nishumbha to come himself, win, and take her hand without delay. It is taught here because the messenger offered her wealth and rank as if she were a jewel to be collected. Her reply refuses to be bought and refuses to be carried off. The terms are plain, and the one who wants her must meet them in person. The Goddess is shown keeping her word and giving the demon a fair, open chance to fail. The verse asks the listener only to notice that her vow is also a challenge. Bhaskararaya's Guptavati is among the commentaries that read such speeches of hers as carrying more than their surface, but the surface here is already complete.
A wrestling ring has a rule posted on the gate: only the one who throws the champion may claim the belt. A rich man sends a servant with gifts and demands the belt anyway. The champion points to the rule. The vow is that rule, and the gifts cannot stand in for the match.
