Meaning · English
You are proud, goddess. Do not speak like this in front of me. What man in the three worlds could stand before Shumbha and Nishumbha? Even before the other demons, none of the gods can hold their ground in battle. Then what of you, a woman, and alone? The gods beginning with Indra, all of them, could not stay before these Shumbha-led demons in the fight. How will you, a woman, go before them? So go, as I have told you, to the side of Shumbha and Nishumbha. Do not go with your dignity shaken loose, dragged there by the hair.
The messenger answers the Goddess's calm reply with insult. His first charge is avalipta, which means smeared or coated, so puffed up, daubed over with pride. He reads her statement as boasting. Then he argues from numbers. The three worlds hold no man who can face Shumbha and Nishumbha. Other demons alone make the gods themselves fall back. Indra and the rest could not stand in the fight. So, he reasons, a woman alone has no chance. The word stri, woman, is his weapon here. He uses it to say she is small, as if that settled the matter. His closing threat is keshakarshana, seizing by the hair. He says she will be hauled to Shumbha with her gauravam, her weight of dignity, shaken off. He offers her a way to avoid that: go willingly, as he says. The passage is taught as the voice of someone who measures everything by the power he serves. Medhas retells it to show how the demons' side sees the Goddess, as a lone woman, and how badly that seeing misses. The messenger never asks who she is. The text lets his list of defeated gods stand as a warning that he does not understand. What it asks of the listener is only to notice how confident a wrong measure can sound.
A man at a quiet well shouts that no bucket in the village has ever reached the bottom, so the stranger holding the rope should go home. He is certain, and he has only counted the ropes he knows. The messenger is that man, counting the gods he has seen fall.
