Meaning · English
So it is: Shumbha is mighty, and Nishumbha is exceedingly brave. But what can I do? The pledge I made long ago was made without weighing it. So go back, you. Carry to the lord of the asuras, with care, all that I have told you, and let him do what is fitting.
The Goddess answers Sugriva's warning by agreeing with it. Shumbha is strong and Nishumbha is very brave, she says, and she does not argue the point. Then she says what binds her: a pratijna. That word means a solemn declaration, a pledge spoken aloud (prati, toward, plus jna, to know or acknowledge). She calls it analochita, made without being looked at, from a root meaning to see. She made it without weighing it first. Her question, what can I do, is not a plea. It says a spoken pledge cannot be taken back, however lightly it was made. She then dismisses him. He is to go, and to carry her words faithfully to the asurendra, the lord of the asuras. The word yukta, which means joined or fitting, closes the verse. Shumbha is to do what suits the situation. She gives him no order and makes no threat. This answers the question the messenger raised: why does she not retreat when the odds look so bad? The Goddess gives her reason. The pledge stands, and she is bound by her own word. The verse leaves the choice with Shumbha.
Someone at a village fair once called out, carelessly, that they would race anyone who cared to run. Now the district champion has heard of it. The boaster admits he is fast, and still walks to the starting line, because the words were already said aloud. Her pledge works the same way: spoken once, it holds.
