Meaning · English

When the great commander of Mahisha's army had been struck down, Chamara came forward, riding an elephant, a tormentor of the gods. He too hurled a spear at the Goddess. Ambika answered quickly. With one roar of "hum" she struck the spear to the ground, its shine gone. Chamara saw his spear broken and fallen, and anger filled him. He flung a trident next. She cut that down as well with her arrows.

Three words carry the picture. Shakti is the spear, and the word also means power, from shak, to be able. Chamara throws his ability at her, and it lands on the ground. Hunkara is the sound "hum", a roar made in the throat. Ambika means little mother. The name tells you who is facing the army: a mother, not a rival. Tridashardana means tormentor of the thirty gods. It tells you what Chamara has done with his strength so far. The story runs plainly. Mahisha's general has fallen. Chamara, mounted high on an elephant, comes next and throws a spear. Ambika does not lift a weapon against it. Her roar alone knocks it down, and it lies dull, without light. Chamara sees this and is filled with anger. Anger does not change what happens. He throws a trident, and she cuts it down with arrows. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who has lost his kingdom and cannot stop grieving. Suratha has asked how a man can be so bound by what he has lost. The battle is part of Medhas's answer, which is about the Goddess as the great power who both binds and frees. He tells it briefly and does not dwell on the fighting. What he shows is the size of the difference. The weapon that frightened the gods falls to a single sound. The text asks the listener to take in that proportion before the hymns of praise come.

A match burns bright in the dark, and one breath puts it out. The room does not argue with the breath. The flame simply goes dark. Chamara's spear is the match, bright and sure of itself, and the Goddess's single roar is the breath that ends it.
