Meaning · English
Then the lion leapt up and stood on the temple of the elephant's head, and fought that loud-roaring enemy of the gods with his bare limbs. As they fought, the two fell from the elephant to the ground, and went on fighting, wild with rage, trading terrible blows. Then the lion sprang high into the sky, came down upon him, and with a blow of his paw struck Chamara's head from his body.
This is a battle told plainly, and the teller moves through it quickly. Medhas is telling King Suratha what happened to the demon general Chamara, who came riding an elephant. A few words help. Simha is the lion, the Goddess's mount, and in this story he fights on her side. Tridashari means enemy of the thirty gods, the name the text uses for the demons. Samrabdha means worked up, wild with rage. Mrigari, the enemy of deer, is another name for the lion. Now the clauses. The lion jumps onto the high round of the elephant's forehead and wrestles Chamara without weapons. Both fall to the ground. There they keep fighting, each in a fury, each landing savage blows. Then the lion leaps into the air, drops on Chamara, and one stroke of his paw severs the head. Why does Medhas tell it? Suratha has lost his kingdom and cannot let go of it. Medhas is showing him, step by step, how the Goddess's power meets each force that rises against it. Chamara arrived with an elephant, a general's rank and a spear. None of that held him up once he was on the ground. The teller draws no lesson from the blows themselves and does not linger on them. What it asks of the listener is only to follow the story as it is told, and to notice that the demon's high seat, his borrowed strength, ends in his fall.
Picture a tall wall of sandbags a child stands on to look big. A push from the side brings the child down onto the grass, and the standing is gone. Chamara's elephant is that height: it made him look unreachable, but the fight ended on level ground.
