Meaning · English
Udagra was struck down in the battle by the Goddess with rocks and trees and the like. Karala was brought low by blows of her teeth, her fist and her palm. The angry Devi ground the arrogant Uddhata to powder with blows of her mace. Vaskala she killed with a spear, Tamra and Andhaka with arrows. Ugrasya, Ugravirya and Mahahanu too the three-eyed supreme Goddess slew with her trident.
Medhas is telling King Suratha how the war went, and this verse is a roll call. Nine of Mahishasura's captains fall in quick order. The names are worth a look, because in Sanskrit they describe the men. Udagra means 'towering'. Ugra means 'fierce', and Ugravirya is 'fierce in strength'. Karala is 'gaping, terrible'. Uddhata means 'puffed up, arrogant'. Mahahanu is 'big-jawed'. Each is named for the thing he was proud of. Then the clauses, one by one. Udagra goes down to stones and trees, whatever lay to hand. Karala falls to her teeth, fist and palm, so she needs no weapon at all. Uddhata is ground to powder by her mace, and she is called angry there. Vaskala meets a spear, Tamra and Andhaka arrows, and the last three her trident. The text calls her Parameshvari, the supreme Goddess, and trinetra, three-eyed. Why is this told here? Suratha has lost his kingdom and cannot let go of it. Medhas is showing him the Mother who is herself the great Maya. Against her, strength, size and fierceness are the very things that do not hold. The text gives no relish to the wounds. It gives names, weapons and an outcome. The retelling asks the listener only to take in who she is. The captains each had one thing to lean on. She is the one who needs nothing in particular, since anything at hand serves her.
Picture a tide coming in over a beach crowded with sandcastles, each built taller than the last, each with a proud flag on top. The tide uses no special tool on any of them. That is how the Goddess meets captains who each lean on one great strength.
