Meaning · English
With her sword she struck the head of Bidala from his body. With arrows she sent Durdhara and Durmukha, both, to the house of Yama. Kalaratri felled Kala with the staff of death. She struck Agradarshana with fierce blows of the sword. And with a sword alone she cut down Asiloma, in that festival of battle. The ganas, the lion and the Goddess raised shouts of victory, and made a feast of it.
Three Sanskrit words open this passage. Yamakshaya is the house of Yama, the lord of death, so to send someone there is to send him to death. Kalaratri means the night of time, or the dark night that ends all things; Medhas uses it as a name for the Goddess herself. Kaladanda is the staff of death, the rod Yama carries. Raṇotsava is the festival of battle. Now the clauses. Medhas names the last of Mahishasura's generals one by one. Bidala loses his head to her sword. Durdhara and Durmukha are sent to Yama by arrows. Kala, whose name means time or death, is struck down by the staff of death. Agradarshana is beaten with fierce sword blows, and Asiloma is cut down with a sword alone. Then the ganas, the lion and the Goddess raise a victory shout and treat the whole fight as a festival. Why does Medhas tell it this way? Suratha has lost a kingdom and Samadhi has lost his family. They are asking what power can bind a person and what can free one. Medhas answers with the Goddess as the great Maya who binds and the Mother who frees. Here the point is that even a general named Kala, time and death, falls to her, and she is called Kalaratri, the night of time. The text teaches that what rules over all else is under her. The festival tone marks that she fights without strain. Medhas keeps the telling brief and does not dwell on the blows.
Picture a long chess game in which a master clears the last pieces off the board, one after another, calmly, while the spectators clap. Each capture is small and quick. The master is the Goddess, the pieces are the generals, and even the piece named Time is taken.
