Meaning · English

The bell that fills the whole world with its sound and breaks the splendor of the daityas: may that bell guard us, Goddess, from our wrongs, as a mother guards her sons. May your sword, smeared with the blood and fat of asuras, bright in your hand, be for our good. Chandika, we bow to you.

Three Sanskrit words carry this. Tejas is splendor, the glare of power a being carries. The daityas, the sons of Diti, had it in plenty. Papa is wrong done, the harm that sticks to a person. Chandika is the fierce one, from chand, to be hot with anger. The gods are praising the Goddess after her battles with the asuras. They turn to two things she carries. The first is the bell. Its sound fills the world, and the splendor of the daityas goes dull under it. Then the gods ask that the same bell guard them from their own wrongs, and they give the measure: as a mother guards her sons. A mother does not first ask whether the child has earned it. The second is the sword, still smeared with the blood and fat of asuras, and bright in her hand. The gods do not hide how it looks. They ask that it be for their good, and they bow to her by her fierce name. The question behind the praise is how something so terrible can also be tender. The gods answer that these are a mother's weapons, turned against what harms her children. The listener is left with that picture: gods bowing before her fiercest form and calling it their shelter.

A mother stands in the doorway with a heavy broom, shouting at a stray dog that has wandered near her toddler. To the dog she is terrifying. To the child she is the safest place there is. Same woman, same raised arm. The bell and sword are that arm, and the Goddess is the mother.
