This slaughter you have done today, Devi, of the great asuras, haters of dharma: having made your own form many, in many ways, Ambika, what other woman does that? In the sciences, in the scriptures, in the lamps of discernment, in the oldest words, who is there but you? In the pit of mine-ness, in thick darkness, you keep this whole world whirling round and round.
The gods are still praising the Goddess after the asuras have fallen. Their praise turns on one question: who else could do this? The first half points to the deed. She took many forms, in many ways, to end those who hated dharma, the order that holds life together. No one else does that. The second half goes further. Vidya is knowledge, from vid, to know. Viveka is discernment, the power to tell one thing from another, and the gods call her the lamp of that discernment. They say the Goddess is in all of it: the sciences, the scriptures, the lamps of discernment, the oldest sayings. Then comes mamata, from mama, 'mine'. It is the habit of calling things my own, and the gods call it a pit in great darkness. The same Goddess keeps the world circling in it. This is why the hymn says she is both knowledge and delusion. The gods are not naming two powers. They name one, who both binds and frees. That answers a question the book keeps asking, which is why Suratha and Samadhi still ache for what has cast them out. Their clinging is mamata. The hymn also asks nothing of the listener except to see who is being praised: the one who holds the lamp and the one who dims it are the same Mother.
Picture a dark room where someone hugs a heavy bundle with both arms. They walk in circles, because they will not set it down to feel for the switch by the door. The bundle is mine-ness, the darkness is the pit, and the switch is discernment, which belongs to the same house.
