Meaning · English
Where there are demons and serpents of fierce venom, where there are enemies and bands of robbers, where a forest fire rages, and out in the middle of the sea, there you stand and guard the world. Mistress of the universe, you guard the universe. Being the self of the universe, you hold it up. You are worthy of worship by the lords of the universe. Those who bow to you in devotion become a shelter for the whole universe.
The gods list dangers: monsters, snakes, enemies, thieves, wildfire, open sea. The list covers every kind of harm, whether it comes from a creature, a person, or nature. Their claim is that she is present at each one. The word they use for guarding, paripasi, comes from pa, to protect, with a prefix meaning all around. She does not guard from one side only. The second half says why she can. Visvesvari means Mistress of the universe, the one who rules it. Visvatmika means she is the universe's own self, so she does not stand outside it like a guard at a gate. She holds it up from within, which is the sense of dharayasi, you sustain. The last line turns to the worshipper. Bhakti-namra means bent low in loving devotion. The gods say that people who bow to her in this way become a shelter for the universe, a place others can rest in. The gods say this just after she has destroyed the demons. They are not only thanking her for one victory. They are saying her care is not limited to one battle. It reaches every place where the world is threatened. Nothing is asked of the listener here beyond hearing how the gods understand her: the guardian is the world's own self.
A mother carries a small child through a crowded market, one hand over the child's head at every turn, past carts, dogs, and open flames. The child never has to name the dangers. The mother is the Goddess in the gods' praise, close at every hazard because she carries the whole of what she guards.
