Meaning · English

Goddess, be gracious. Protect us always from fear, as you have done just now, at once, by ending the asuras. Lead the sins of all the worlds quickly to peace, and the great calamities born when portents ripen. Be gracious to us who bow, Goddess who takes away the world's suffering. Worthy of praise, you who are honored by the dwellers of the three worlds, be the giver of boons to all peoples.

Three Sanskrit words carry the prayer. Prasida means be gracious. It comes from sad, to sit or settle, with the prefix pra: let your face grow clear and kind toward us. Utpata means a portent, a sign that rises up before trouble, from ut, up, and pat, to fall or fly. The text speaks of calamities born when such portents ripen, as fruit ripens on a branch. Varada means giver of boons: vara is a wished-for gift, and da is giving. Now the clauses. The gods first ask for graciousness and for protection from fear, pointing to what she has just done by ending the asuras. Her past act is their reason for asking again. Next they ask her to bring the sins of all the worlds, and the great calamities that grow from ripened omens, quickly to peace. Then they name themselves as those who bow, and name her as the one who removes the world's suffering. Last they call her worthy of praise, honored in all three worlds, and ask her to be the giver of boons to the peoples. The hymn teaches that the gods do not claim their own strength. They have seen her protect once and ask her to protect the whole world's wrongs and sorrows too. Their request is wide: sins and calamities of every world, not only their own safety. They ask from a bowed posture, and the text presents that as the right way to ask.

A village has just come through a flood because one bank held. Afterward the people walk to that bank and ask it to keep holding, through every rainy season, for everyone downstream. The gods do the same: they point to what she has already done, then ask her protection to cover all the worlds.
