Meaning · English
The Goddess says: "Gods, I am ready to give a boon. Choose whatever your mind wishes, and I will give it, so long as it helps the worlds." The gods answer: "Sovereign of all, calm every trouble of the three worlds. Do the same again: bring the destruction of our enemies."
Two voices speak, and each has a key word. The Goddess offers a vara, a boon, from the root vr, to choose. She does not pick the gift. She says the gods may choose it themselves, with one condition: it must benefit the worlds. The gods answer with two requests. The first is to quiet every badha. That word means a pressing, an affliction, from badh, to press hard on. They ask that the pressure be lifted from the three worlds, and they do not ask it for themselves alone. The second is the end of their vairi, their enemies, by vinashana, which is destruction or scattering. They say to do it "in just this way", meaning as she has already done. Just before this, the gods praised her for ending the demon Shumbha. So they are asking her to act the same way whenever such enemies rise again. The text places this at the end of the hymn. The gods have praised her at length, and now they are asked what they want. What they want turns out to be relief for everyone, and protection that lasts. The Devi Mahatmya teaches that her help is not given in secret or for private gain. A request that serves the worlds is the kind she invites.
A village elder is told by the district officer, "Ask for anything the village needs." She does not ask for her own roof. She asks for the broken embankment to be mended, and for the trouble that keeps breaching it to be stopped. The gods ask in the same way, for the common safety first.
