A Cowherd's Daughter Returns

Devi Mahatmya 11.38

Meaning · English

When the twenty-eighth age of the Vaivasvata Manu's time has come, two more great asuras, Shumbha and Nishumbha, will be born. Then I will be born in the house of Nanda the cowherd, from the womb of Yashoda. Living on the Vindhya mountain, I will destroy those two.

The Goddess has just offered the gods a boon. Here she names the time, the place and the family of her next coming. Three words carry it. Manvantara means the span of one Manu, from manu and antara, an interval. Vaivasvata is the Manu of the present span. Yuga is an age, and she counts to the twenty-eighth. So she gives a date by the old reckoning, not a vague 'someday'. Mahasura means a great asura, one of the beings set against the gods, and she names two: Shumbha and Nishumbha. The verse then tells where she will come from. She will be born in Nanda the cowherd's house, from Yashoda's womb. The Goddess does not choose a palace. She chooses a herdsman's home. She says she will destroy the two, and that she will dwell on the Vindhya mountain, so the name Vindhyavasini, 'she who lives on the Vindhya', belongs to her. The gods pleaded for relief from their enemies. The text gives its answer as a promise with an address, so that when the trouble returns, they will know where help is coming from. The listener is told only this: the Mother's help has a shape in the world, a family and a hill.

A doctor going away pins a note on the clinic door giving the day she will be back and the road where she can be found. The patients need no more than that to stop worrying. The Goddess's promise works the same way: a date, a family, a mountain.
