Meaning · English
Again I will descend to the earth in a most terrible form, and I will slay the Vaipracitta demons. As I devour those fierce great demons of the Vaipracitta line, my teeth will turn red, like the blossom of the pomegranate. Then the gods in heaven, and human beings in the world of mortals, praising me, will always speak of me as Raktadantika, the Red-Toothed.
The Goddess is still answering the gods' request, and here she names a third coming. Three things in the words are worth taking apart. Raudra means fierce or terrible, from rudra, the roaring one. The Goddess says this form will be atiraudra, terrible beyond the usual. Vaipracitta names a family of demons, the sons or line of Viprachitti. Raktadantika is a name made of two plain words: rakta, red, and dantika, toothed. Now the clauses. First, she says she will descend again to the earth, in a form so fierce that it is meant for a fierce task: ending the Vaipracitta demons. Second, she says her teeth will become red, and she compares the red to pomegranate blossom, a bright, deep orange-red flower any village child would know. The text gives the colour through a flower, not through a scene of horror. Third, she says gods in heaven and people on earth will praise her and call her by this name, always. Why is it taught here? The gods have asked for help whenever trouble comes, and she answers with a promise: the name and the form will arrive, and so will the remedy. A name is also a way to reach her. The verse says people on both levels, heaven and earth, will have one name to speak. The text offers no detail of the battle and asks nothing of the listener. It tells the gods, and the reader, that she has already settled she will come, and what she will be called when she does.
A child who has once been lost in a crowded fair learns the name of the stall where the mother will wait, and carries it. The Goddess announces a future form and a name beforehand, so that anyone in trouble already knows what to call her.
