Meaning · English
I am a merchant named Samadhi, born in a family of wealth. My sons and my wife, greedy for money and unrighteous, cast me out. They took my riches and left me without wealth, without wife, without sons. Grieving, rejected by those who were my own kin, I have come to the forest.
The merchant answers the king's question from verse 1.15: who are you, and why do you look so sorrowful? He gives his name, Samadhi, his caste, vaishya, the merchant class, and his birth, into a family of dhanin, people of money. Then he tells what was done to him. His sons and wife drove him out. The word he uses for them is asadhu, not good, not upright, and the reason he gives is dhanalobha, greed for wealth. They took his money first and sent him away second. So he lost wealth, wife and sons together. He says he came to the forest duhkhi, in sorrow, and that he was nirasta, thrown out, by people who were his apta-bandhu, his trusted kin. The pain he names is betrayal by those closest to him. This is why the verse is placed here. The king has just lost his kingdom to enemies and ministers. The merchant has lost his home to his own household. Both are sitting in the same hermitage with the same question, and the question only becomes sharp once the merchant's wrong is laid out in full: why does the heart still turn toward people like these? Verse 1.20 shows it still does, and 1.22 has the king put the puzzle to him. Nothing is asked of the listener yet except to hear how complete the loss was, so the puzzle that follows carries its full weight. The name Samadhi, which also means a settled, collected mind, sits strangely beside a man so unsettled.
A tree at the edge of a field has its fruit stripped by the very people who have always sat in its shade. Nobody else did it. The shade-sitters shook the branches bare and walked off, and the tree stands there still giving shade. The merchant is that tree, robbed from within the circle of those he sheltered.
