Meaning · English
So I do not know how my sons are doing, whether things are well or ill with them, nor how my own people and my wife are living, while I stay here. Is there well-being in their house, or misfortune, just now? How are they? Are they living rightly, or wrongly, those sons of mine?
The merchant Samadhi is still speaking to King Suratha, and here he admits something sad. He sits in the forest, cut off from news, and his mind will not stop asking about the family that threw him out. Three words carry it. Kushala means well-being, and akushala its opposite, so he wonders whether life at home is going well or badly. Pravritti means how things are going on, the daily course of a household. Sadvritta and durvritta mean living rightly and living wrongly, and this is the question that hurts most: he asks whether his sons are good or bad, and he still calls them his. Read clause by clause, he says he does not know how his sons are, nor his relatives, nor his wife. He asks whether the house is safe or in trouble. He asks how they are now. Then he asks about their conduct. Medhas will later show where this comes from, and Samadhi is laying out the evidence. He tells the king that his worry has not eased even though they wronged him. The question underneath is why a mind keeps tending people who gave it nothing but pain. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to notice that this pull is real and that even a wise man feels it. As far as the commentators go, they take his questions as the plain mark of attachment, not as a plan.
A man who has moved to a new town still checks the weather report for the old one, though he will never walk those streets again. His habit keeps tending a place he has left, just as Samadhi's mind keeps tending a home that has shut its door on him.
