Why Love Those Who Cast Us Out

Devi Mahatmya 1.22

Meaning · English

The king asks: those greedy ones, wife, sons and the rest, who drove you out and took your wealth, why does your mind still cling to them in affection? The merchant answers: it is just as you say. What can I do? My mind will not turn hard toward them.

Three words carry this exchange. Sneha is affection, and its root sense is stickiness, like oil or glue. Manas is the mind, the part of us that feels, wants and remembers. Nishthura means hard or pitiless, and it is the one thing the merchant says his mind cannot become. The king asks plainly. These people were greedy, they cast the merchant out, and they took his wealth. So why does his mind keep attaching itself to them? The king is not scolding. He is puzzled, because he feels the same pull toward the kingdom that was taken from him. The merchant does not defend his family and does not argue. He agrees that the king has described him correctly. Then he asks what he can do, since his mind will not harden. He sees the wrong clearly. His heart does not follow what he sees. This is why the question is put at the start of the Devi Mahatmya. The sage Medhas will answer it later, and the answer is the Goddess as Mahamaya, who binds even the wise. Here the text first shows the problem honestly. Knowing and feeling can part ways, and the text treats that as something to be explained, not as a failing to be ashamed of.

A path worn into a hillside by years of walking. Long after the house at its end has been shut against you, your feet still turn onto it without asking. The affection is that worn path: laid down by habit and long use, and it keeps leading where the mind has already judged it should not.
