Those greedy for wealth drove me out, and I gave up my father's affection and my wife's and kin's tenderness. Even so, my heart stays with them. I do not understand it, wise one. Though I know their faults, my mind leans in love toward these kinsmen who have none of the qualities that deserve it. Because of them I sigh, and my spirit sinks. What can I do, when my mind will not turn hard against people who give it no love?
The merchant Samadhi answers the king's question from 1.22: why does his mind still hold affection for the family that threw him out? He does not defend them. He admits that greed drove him from his home and cost him a father's affection, a wife's tenderness and his kin's warmth. He then says the strange part. His heart is still with them. Three words carry it. Prema is love, and pravana means sloping toward, the way ground slopes to water. His mind has a downhill lean toward his family, and he did not choose the slope. Viguna means lacking good qualities, and he uses it of his own relatives. He knows their faults. Nishthura means hard, and it is the hardness he cannot summon. He wants his mind to turn firm against people who give him no love, and it will not. He also tells what this costs. He sighs for them, and his spirit sinks. The clinging is not comfortable. It hurts. The text places this here to show that knowing is one thing and the heart's pull is another. Samadhi says plainly that he knows and still cannot understand why he feels as he does. His question, "what can I do?", is honest. He does not claim to have mastered anything. The text presents this puzzle as the thing that needs explaining, and that is why the sage is asked about it. The verse asks nothing of the listener yet. It asks only that the puzzle be seen clearly: a man can be wronged, can see it plainly, and can still be held.
A tongue keeps going back to a broken tooth, though the tooth only hurts it. The tongue knows the edge is sharp and goes anyway. The mind does the same with kin who wronged it: it knows the harm and still returns to the place of the wound.
