Then the two of them, the merchant named Samadhi and the best of kings, came together into the presence of the sage. They greeted him as custom asks and as his worth deserved, and he greeted them in return. Then the merchant and the king sat down, and they began to talk with him, a little at a time, on one matter and another.

The story turns from complaint to action here. Markandeya tells the sage Medhas's listener that the king and the merchant did not stay apart with their grief. They went to the sage together. Two words carry the scene. Samadhi is the merchant's name, from sam-a-dha, to put together, to settle. It is also the word for a mind gathered and still, so a man named for steadiness arrives with an unsteady heart. Parthiva, in the phrase for the king, means one who belongs to the earth, a ruler of land. Suratha has lost exactly that. The clauses go in order. They come to the sage. They greet him yathanyayam and yatharham, as rule requires and as his worth deserves, so the courtesy is proper and fitted to the man. The sage answers them with the same courtesy. They sit. Then they speak of various things, not yet of the wound. The text teaches why this matters here. Both men have just asked, in their own words, why the mind clings to people who cast them out. Neither has an answer. Markandeya shows them going to someone who might. The slow, ordinary talk comes first, and the real question waits until they are settled. Nothing is asked of the listener except to notice that these men brought their trouble to a teacher, and brought it with respect.

Two travellers, each carrying the same ache, reach a village well at dusk. They set down their bundles, greet the elder sitting there, and talk about the road and the weather before either mentions what brought them. The well is the sage; the small talk is the courtesy that readies the heart for the real question.
