Having struck down the ranks of the Pramathas, the demon rushed on to kill the Great Goddess's lion. At that, Ambika grew angry. He too, mighty in strength and swollen with rage, ploughed the ground with his hooves, hurled mountains high with his two horns, and bellowed. The earth, crushed by the whirl of his speed, split apart. Lashed by his tail, the ocean flooded everywhere. Torn by his shaking horns, the clouds went off in pieces, hundreds of them. Blown by his breath, mountains fell from the sky.

Three words carry the passage. Kopa is anger, and it is the first word the verse gives to both sides. Ambika is the Goddess as Mother, a name that means little mother or mother of all. Mahavirya means great strength, from vira, a hero. The story is plain. Mahishasura has cut through the Pramathas, Shiva's attendants who fight beside the Goddess. Now he charges her lion. Ambika grows angry at this, and the text says so in one line before turning to him. Then Medhas, the sage telling the tale, shows what the demon's rage does. His hooves tear the ground. His horns throw mountains. His speed cracks the earth. His tail whips the sea over the land. His horns shred the clouds. His breath drops mountains out of the sky. Every part of the world is touched, and nothing in it is spared. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who lost his realm to people he trusted, and to Samadhi, a merchant thrown out by his own family. Both know what a few angry people can do to an ordered world. The picture answers a worry they carry: how large can the force against the Goddess be? The text says it is vast, reaching earth, ocean and sky. Its point is the scale of what stands against her. The verse asks only that the listener see how great that disorder is.

Think of a bull loose in a market. Stalls fall, crates split, water spills over the lane, and people scatter. Nobody has to say how strong it is. The wreckage says it. Mahisha's rage works the same way: the size of the damage shows the size of the force.
