Meaning · English

Then the lion form arose at once. As soon as Ambika cut off its head, a man holding a sword appeared. Right away the Goddess brought that man down with her arrows, together with his sword and shield. Then he became a great elephant. With his trunk he dragged the great lion and roared. As he dragged, the Goddess cut off his trunk with her sword.

Medhas is retelling a battle in which the demon keeps changing his body. Three forms pass in a few lines: lion, swordsman, elephant. A few words help. Ambika means little mother, from amba, mother. Medhas calls the Goddess by this name even in the middle of a fight. Khadga is the sword. It is carried first by the demon as a man, then by the Goddess when she cuts the elephant. Kara means both hand and trunk. The elephant drags the lion with his kara, and she cuts that kara off. Now the clauses. She cuts the lion's head, and at once a man with a sword stands where the lion was. She brings him down with arrows, and his sword and shield fall with him. He turns into a great elephant, drags the lion with his trunk and roars. While he drags, she cuts the trunk with her sword. Medhas tells this plainly. Each form ends, and the demon simply takes up the next one. Nothing in the telling shows her tiring or hesitating. The demon is not shown winning anything either. He gains only the next form to be cut down. It is told to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom, and to Samadhi, a merchant cast out by his family. Both are still gripped by what they lost. The Goddess is shown here as the mother who keeps meeting every new shape of the threat. The telling asks the listener only to see this and go on listening to the story.

Peeling an onion: each layer you pull away shows another layer under it, and the cook's hands simply go on to the next. The demon's lion, swordsman and elephant are those layers, and the Goddess is the steady hand that meets each one as it appears.
