Meaning · English

Then the great demon took the buffalo's body again, and again he shook the three worlds, with everything that moves and everything that stands still. Then Chandika, the Mother of the world, grew angry. She drank the finest drink, and drank again, and again, and laughed, her eyes red. The demon, swollen and drunk on his own strength and valour, roared too. With his two horns he hurled mountains at Chandika.

Three words carry this scene. Jaganmata means Mother of the world: jagat is the moving world, mata is mother. Pana means a drink, from the root pa, to drink. Mada means intoxication, from mad, to be drunk or beside oneself. It is the word the text uses for the demon's state. Now the clauses. Medhas tells King Suratha that Mahishasura, who had left the buffalo form, takes it up again. The same body brings the same trouble: the three worlds, and all things that move or stay still, are shaken. The Goddess grows angry, and the text calls her the Mother of the world even here. She drinks the best drink, again and again, and laughs with red eyes. The demon roars and throws mountains with his horns. Medhas says he is drunk on his own strength and courage. The text sets two drinkers side by side. She drinks a cup and stays steady. He drinks nothing and is still drunk, on pride in his own power. Only the Goddess is called Mother, and her anger is not a loss of herself. Medhas tells this to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant thrown out by his family, both still gripped by what they lost. The story shows a power that has forgotten its limits, and the Mother who does not need to hurry. Hurling mountains does not move her. The text asks nothing of the listener here. It shows the two kinds of drunkenness and leaves them side by side.

Picture a small child in a tantrum, stamping and flinging toys across the room, while the mother sits calmly with her tea, watching, and even smiling. The child's whole show of strength changes nothing in her. The demon is the child, and the cup and the laughter are the Mother's ease.
