Mistaking Form for Limit

Bhagavad Gita 7.24

Meaning · English

Those of small understanding think that I, who am formless, have taken on a personality. They do not know my higher nature, which is imperishable and beyond compare.

Three words carry the verse. Avyakta means unshown, without a form that can be pointed at. Vyakti is the opposite: a form that has appeared, a personality. Abuddhi means lacking buddhi, the faculty that discerns. Krishna names a mistake of discernment, not of character. People look at him standing in a chariot and conclude that the formless has become somebody, as if he were once nothing in particular and is now a person who started to exist. Krishna says this misses his param bhava, his higher nature. That nature is avyaya, not spent or reduced by anything, and anuttama, with nothing above it. So appearing in a form costs him nothing and shrinks nothing. Shankara reads the mistake as taking the Lord for an ordinary being who passed from the unshown into a body. Ramanuja says the form is not made of matter at all, so it cannot be a lowering. Madhva stresses that the form belongs to him always, and is no later addition. The reason Krishna gives is the one in the verses beside it: small understanding grasps what is near and takes it for the whole. What he asks of Arjuna is to see the person speaking and not stop there.

A child sees the sun lying in a puddle after rain, bright and small, and decides the sun has come down to the size of a coin. The sky above is untouched and undiminished. The puddle shows the sun without holding it, as the visible Krishna shows what is not reduced by showing.

1. Today, when you first meet or hear from someone, such as a shopkeeper, a neighbour or a voice on the phone, wait one full minute before settling on an opinion of them. 2. In the evening, choose one person you judged quickly today. Write one line on what you could not have seen from where you stood. 3. Next time you look at an old photograph of someone you love, notice that it shows one moment of them and not the whole person.

A daughter walks into a hospital ward and sees her father thin and small in a pale gown, an IV in his hand. For a moment she thinks this is what he has become. Then step by step the picture widens. She remembers him carrying her on his shoulders, the way he is steady when others panic, and she sees that the gown and the bed are what shows today and not all there is of him. She sits down, speaks to him as she always has, and asks the nurse what he needs. Ordinary experience confirms that a first look, especially in a frightening place, is quick and narrow. The Gita's teaching is about Krishna and his higher nature, said as its own claim. The scene borrows only the habit of mistaking what appears for the whole. The verse does not promise that her father will recover, that her fear will go, or that she can do without his doctors. It speaks to how she looks, and the illness stays what it is.
