The Veil of Yoga-Maya
Bhagavad Gita 7.25
Meaning · English
I am not plainly seen by everyone, for I am covered by my own divine energy. This deluded world does not recognize me as unborn and unchanging.
Three terms carry the verse. Yoga-maya is God's own power, the energy by which he joins and veils. Mudha means deluded, a mind stuck and unable to see past the surface. Aja and avyaya mean unborn and unchanging: no beginning, no decay. Krishna tells Arjuna that he is not manifest to everyone. A veil, made by his own divine energy, covers him. Because of it, people look at him and do not know him. They take him for someone who was born and will die, like themselves. That is the clause about the world not knowing him. The reason sits in the verses just before and after: people reach for lesser powers, or take the unseen to have become a mere form, and so miss his real nature. The verse asks the listener for humility. Not seeing is no proof that nothing is there. Shankara reads the veil as maya that hides the Lord's true nature from ordinary sight. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's own wonderful power, by which he stays hidden from those without devotion. Madhva stresses that the Lord's body is never born and never changes, and that only grace lifts the veil.
Picture the sun on a heavy, overcast day. Nobody doubts it is up there, yet no one can point to it. The cloud is not the sun's enemy and does not touch it. It only decides what the eye can reach. So the veil stands to Krishna: he is present and unchanged, while the cover limits what people see.
1. Pick one person or task you have judged quickly, and tonight write down one thing about it you cannot yet see. 2. Tomorrow, when you feel sure you understand something, pause for ten seconds and ask what might be hidden from you. 3. Once this week, sit for five quiet minutes and notice how much you rely on first impressions of people.
A man stands in a hospital corridor at night, waiting for news about his father's surgery. He has read every leaflet and asked every question, and still the outcome is hidden from him. He wants to feel certain, and nothing gives him certainty. The verse would change this moment in small steps. First, it names the limit plainly: not everything is shown to everyone, and being shut out from the whole picture is a condition of being a person, not a personal failure. Second, he can stop treating his current view as the full view. What he sees is one side of a larger matter. Third, he can sit with the not-knowing without filling it with the worst guess. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind short on facts tends to invent them, and that fear invents darkly. Krishna's teaching goes further, to the Lord himself being veiled, but even the plain part helps. The limit is honest: the verse does not tell him his father will recover, does not lift the fear, and does not replace the surgeon's word.
