Meaning · English
Sent off by that command, the demon Dhumralochana hurried out, surrounded by sixty thousand asuras. He saw the Goddess seated on the snowy mountain and called up to her, "Go to the presence of Shumbha and Nishumbha. If you do not come gladly to my master today, I will carry you off by force, helpless, dragged by the hair."
Medhas tells the sage's story of a commander who leaves at once, with sixty thousand soldiers, and finds the Goddess sitting calmly on the snow. He gives her a choice, and then takes the choice away. Three words carry it. Priti is gladness or willing affection, and he asks for her to come in that spirit. Bala is strength, and balat means by force. He puts the two side by side, as if they were the same thing. Bhartar, "my master", comes from the root bhr, to bear or support. It is the word for a lord who sustains and also for a husband, yet the one he names sustains nothing in this scene and only sends an army. Clause by clause: he marches. He sees her. He shouts the summons. He says that if she is not willing today, he will drag her by the hair, and the word for her state, vihvala, means helpless or distraught. The text lets his speech show who he is. He cannot ask without threatening, and he pictures her humiliated before she has said a word. It is taught here because Medhas is answering the king and the merchant, who have both lost what they held. The story shows what the Goddess faces, power that treats a person as property, before it shows what she does. Nothing is asked of the listener except to hear the demand as the text sets it down.
A bailiff arrives at a small house with a crowd behind him to evict one woman sitting quietly on her porch. He thinks the size of the crowd settles the matter. The crowd is Dhumralochana's sixty thousand, and the woman on the porch is the Goddess, who has not yet spoken.
