Meaning · English
She answers him: "You were sent by the lord of the daityas. You are strong, and an army surrounds you. If you carry me off by force like this, then what can I do to you?" Spoken to, the asura Dhumralochana ran at her. Then the Goddess Ambika made him ash with a single hum.
Three words carry the verse. Bala means strength, and it is used twice: balavan, the strong one, and balat, by force. Huṅkara is the sound hum, a breath from the throat and nothing more. Bhasma is ash, what remains once a thing has burned. The verse has two halves. In the first, the Goddess repeats Dhumralochana's own boasts back to him: sent by the king of the daityas, mighty, an army at his back, ready to drag her off by force. Then she asks what she could possibly do to him. The question is not a plea. She names his whole case, and the way she asks it leaves it with nothing under it. In the second half Medhas narrates the result. The asura hears her and charges. The Goddess, here called Ambika, the Mother, answers with a hum, and he becomes ash. No weapon, no struggle, and the sixty thousand behind him are not yet in the picture. The text places this early in the Shumbha and Nishumbha story to show where the contest really stands. Shumbha's strength comes from borrowed numbers and an order given from far away. The Goddess's power needs none of that. Medhas tells it to Suratha and Samadhi, two men who have lost what they leaned on, so they can see how little force-by-numbers weighs against her. The verse asks nothing of the listener beyond noticing that.
A paper lantern is carried bravely toward a candle flame. It is large, bright, and held up by many hands. The flame does not move. The paper simply goes. Dhumralochana's size and his army are the paper, and the Goddess is the flame that never needed to chase anything.
