Meaning · English
Then on the great army of the asuras, swollen with rage, Ambika rained down sharp arrows, and spears, and axes. Then her lion, the one who carries her, shook his mane in anger. He gave a roar that was terrible to hear and leapt into the asura host. Some of the daityas he struck down with a blow of his paw. Others he seized in his mouth. Others he overpowered by pressing down upon them. In this way he killed the great asuras.
Three words carry the passage. Asura is the name for the Goddess's opponents. It is often read as 'not-god', one who stands against the gods. Daitya is another name for the same host, meaning a child of Diti. Vahana means vehicle, from the root vah, to carry. The lion is called her vahana, so he is the one who bears her. Sayaka, shakti and parashu are her missiles: arrows, spears and axes. The story runs in three steps. The asura army is already angry, because its commander has just been burnt to ash. Ambika answers the anger with a storm of weapons, arrows first and then spears and axes. Then the lion, who has stayed at her side, charges in with a roar. Medhas lists how he kills: with his paw, with his mouth, by pressing down. He tells it quickly and moves on. He does not linger on the wounds. What Medhas draws from it is in the way he names the lion. He does not call him a beast she happens to have with her. He calls him hers, the one who carries her, and so his strength is her strength at work. In the Devi Mahatmya, the force that crushes the army is not outside the Goddess. It is part of her. The king and the merchant listening are people who lost kingdom and family, and they are hearing that the Mother's power is large enough to meet an army that no one else could stop.
A rider's horse answers the lightest touch of the rein and goes where the rider means to go. Nobody watching thinks the horse has a quarrel of its own. The lion is like that: he charges at her wish, and his strength is hers moving.
