The lion tore open the bellies of some with his claws. With the blow of his paw he struck off the heads of others, each one cut apart from its body. Others lost arms and heads and fell away from him. With his mane shaking, he drank the blood from the bodies of still others. In a moment the whole of that army was brought to ruin by the great-spirited lion, the Goddess's mount, in his fury.

Medhas is still telling the story of the lion, and this stretch closes the account of the army's fall. Three words carry it. Kesari means the one with a mane, from kesara, mane; it is the lion's name, and the shaken mane marks his fury. Vahana means vehicle or mount, from vah, to carry; the lion is called the Goddess's vahana, so his work is hers. Mahatma means great-souled, from maha, great, and atman, self. Medhas gives the lion this word even in the middle of slaughter. The clauses run in order. Some demons have their bellies opened by claws. Others are struck by his paw and their heads fall away from their bodies. Others lose arms and heads and drop back. Others have their blood drunk by the lion as his mane shakes. Then comes the summary: within a moment, the whole force is finished. Why is it told here? The king Suratha and the merchant Samadhi have asked what power could undo a great army. Medhas answers that the Goddess's own mount does it, in a moment, while she herself stays untouched. The telling is brief and does not linger. Its point is how complete and how quick the end is, not the wounds. Medhas asks the listeners only to see where the strength lies: the army was large and armed, and still it did not last, because it stood against her.

A great wave breaks on a sand fort that children spent the afternoon building. The walls, towers and moat are gone in one pull of water, and the beach lies flat. The fort is the demon army, so carefully set up. The wave is the Goddess's power, which ends it in a moment.
