Meaning · English

Shumbha, lord of the daityas, heard that Dhumralochana had been killed by the Devi, and that the whole of his army had been destroyed by the Devi's lion. His lip trembled, and he burned with anger. Then he gave an order to the two great asuras, Chanda and Munda.

Three words carry the verse. Daityadhipati means lord of the daityas, the sons of Diti, one of the asura clans. Shumbha is their king, so the news lands on the one who has to answer for it. Prasphuritadhara means a trembling lip, from sphur, to quiver or flicker. It is the body giving away what the king feels before he says a word. Ajnapayamasa means he commanded, from ajna, an order. Now the plain sense, clause by clause. Shumbha hears two things: his commander Dhumralochana has fallen to the Devi, and the entire force that went with him has been wiped out by her lion. His anger rises, and it shows in his mouth. Then he does not stop to weigh what happened. He sends out an order, naming Chanda and Munda, two great asuras, as the next ones to go. The sage Medhas tells this to Suratha and Samadhi as a turn in the story. A loss that should have made Shumbha ask what he was facing makes him send more men. The text shows anger answering defeat with another attempt, not with understanding. It asks the listener to see how that works, and to notice the trembling lip as the first sign.

A man loses a hand at cards, slaps the table, and pushes his whole stack forward on the next hand without looking at what beat him. The anger decides the bet. Shumbha's order to Chanda and Munda is that second bet, placed before he has understood the first loss.
