Meaning · English

Shumbha calls out to the two generals: "Chanda, Munda, you are surrounded by many troops. Go there, and having gone, bring her back quickly. Drag her by the hair and bind her. If you are in doubt about the fight, then strike her down with every weapon, with all the asuras together. When that wicked woman is struck down, and her lion is brought low, come back quickly, having bound her and taken her, Ambika."

Shumbha gives his order in three steps, and each step shows how he thinks. Two words are worth taking apart. Keshesu akrishya means to drag by the hair. It is how one handles a captive or a servant, and Shumbha uses it for the Goddess. Baddhva means having bound. He uses it twice, in the middle step and at the end. He wants her tied up and carried home, not simply defeated. The first step is to go and bring her back fast, with a large army behind them. The second is a fallback. If they doubt they can take her, they should hit her with every weapon and every asura at once. The third is the return. Once she is killed and her lion felled, they should come back with her bound. The order contradicts itself. He asks for her alive and tied, then for her dead. He also calls her wicked, though she has only defended herself. The lion, which had just destroyed his army, is spoken of as something easy to bring down. The Devi Mahatmya places this order just after Shumbha hears of his general's death and his lost troops. The question it answers is what a ruler does when force has already failed. The text shows him doing more of the same, with more weapons. At the end he still names her Ambika, Mother, without seeming to notice. The commentators read the name as telling: the one he wants to chain is the Mother of all.

A man tries to catch the sea in a net. When the first net tears, he sends for ten more and orders them all thrown together. The nets are Shumbha's armies and weapons. The sea is the Goddess, who cannot be gathered up by anything that works on lesser things.
