Meaning · English
Then the demons were given the order, with Chanda and Munda at their head. They went out with the four divisions of an army, weapons raised. And they saw the Goddess, a faint smile on her face, set upon a lion on the broad golden peak of the king of mountains. Seeing her, they bent themselves to the work of seizing her. Some had their bows drawn back and their swords in hand, and others, ready for the fight, came close to her.
Three words carry the scene. Caturanga-bala is the four-limbed army of old India: foot soldiers, horsemen, chariots and elephants. Medhas names the whole of it, so that Suratha and Samadhi picture a vast force, not a handful of men. Ishad-hasa means a slight smile, a smile barely begun. Udyama means effort or exertion, the gathering of strength for a task. It is the word used for the army's attempt to take her. Now the clauses. The demon chiefs Chanda and Munda are ordered out, and they march with everything they have. They come upon the Goddess on a golden mountaintop. She sits on her lion and she is faintly smiling. The army does not stop or wonder. It reads her as something to be taken and sets about taking her. Some strain to seize her. Others string their bows, draw their swords and close in. Medhas is telling this to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant thrown out by his own family. Both are still gripped by what they lost. Their question is what holds a person to such things and what frees them. Medhas answers with the Goddess, and this scene shows her first from the side of those who misjudge her. The army sees a lone woman and a smile, and takes both for weakness. Medhas lets the listeners see the mistake before it is paid for. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to watch closely: the army's certainty on one side, the Goddess's stillness on the other.
A crowd with ropes and ladders walks up to a great boulder on a hillside. It sits quietly, so they take it for something easily hauled away. The boulder is the Goddess on her peak. Her stillness is not helplessness, and the crowd has mistaken one for the other.
